Heard on the Mall

So you wonder where all the money's gone? After extensive investigation, a little bribery and several shots of bathtub gin we don't have a clue either. However, with our ear to the muddy ground we did pick up this rumor. The University does not pay property tax, but each year must apply for a waiver to avoid doing so. This year the waiver was not applied for, and then to top it off, someone actually sent payment in to the city totalling around two million dollars. The University is now trying to get its money back. I personally hope this rumor is wrong. Two million is a lot of bucks for those of us not receiving bonuses.

Reports say that $300,000 in dean raises were passed in the form of "personnel actions" at the last BOT meeting.

Also another $150,000 went to some kind of consulting outfit.

Given the recent public records request fiascos in Michigan and Wisconsin, I think we should recommend that all UT faculty stop using university email immediately.

I just received from our faculty council a PDF document indicating that the university is planning to eliminate tenure, eliminate sabbaticals, lay off as many lecturers as possible, outsource faculty speeches and so on for university enrichment, etc. I would hope this will be fought vigorously. Do you guys know anything about it?

"A culture that does not grasp the vital interplay between morality and power, which mistakes management techniques for wisdom, and fails to understand that the measure of a civilization is its compassion, not its speed or ability to consume, condemns itself to death." Chris Hedges (Empire of Illusion: The End of Literacy and the Triumph of Spectacle)
It seems a description of the Jacobs administration and what UT has become: The End of Literacy and the Triumph of Spectacle indeed.
