The Maotization of the University

Excerpt, Quotations From Chairman Mao TseTung

Within the ranks of the people, democracy is correlative with centralism and freedom with discipline. They are two opposites of a single entity
[the New Entity?] contradictory as well as united, and we should not one-sidely emphasize one to the denial of the other. Within the ranks of the people [faculty?] we cannot do without freedom, nor can we do without discipline; we cannot do without democracy; nor can we do without centralism. This unity of democracy and centralism, of freedom and discipline, constitute our democratic centralism. Under this system our people enjoy extensive democracy and freedom, but at the same time they have to keep within the bounds of socialist discipline.

Sound familiar?

As a student in the college of arts and sciences this is one on the most disturbing things I could ever image hearing from a so called leader. I can only hope a replacement is on the way however with the current administration I doubt it.

The disturbing element to this post is that the quote is from Chairman Mao and yet is indistinguishable from something one might glean from the President's "state of the university" address. We should be clear: the quote is NOT one of "Jakes Takes." There are times around here when I, for one, yearn for a leader with Mao's nuance. How 'bout a little "retraining" for our tenured faculty? Yep. "Retraining."
