From the Blade

In a Letter to the Editor in this past Sunday's Toledo Blade (http://www.toledoblade.com/Letters-to-the-Editor/2012/05/13/Liberal-arts-education-a-life-changer.html) the writer commented on how several area colleges and universities are striving to promote the liberal arts. But the writer included--by name--UT! Wouldn't many of us agree that at UT any striving to promote the liberal arts is primarily (almost exclusively?) on the part of faculty and staff, and of only a very few administrators?

Did everyone see this? http://www.usatoday.com/sports/college/story/2012-05-14/ncaa-college-athletics-finances-database/54955804/1

Sort by conference. In 2011, UT's athletics expenditures exceeded athletics revenues by $1.2 million, the largest shortfall in the MAC. The only reason it isn't WORSE is that UT collected $10 million in mandatory student fees to subsidize sports. College football is exciting and everything, but is it really our mission to subsidize it at this level?

Recent Study Reaffirms You Are What You Read

file:///C:/Documents%20and%20Settings/owner/Desktop/Fox%20&%20Friends%20-%20Fox%20News%20Channel%20-%20Fox%20News.htm

Author, critic and English professor John Gardner spoke of the importance of Moral Fiction (also the title of one of his books of criticism on that topic).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/On_Moral_Fiction

The recent study cited above supports what should be the fairly obvious idea that good, moral (and likewise bad, immoral) writing is literally absorbed almost as if by osmosis into the psyche of the reader - who identifies with and psychologically emulates the characters of novels.

Read moral classical or Victorian and Edwardian fiction and you are absorbing positive moral character in your reading.

Read The Catcher in the Rye etc. and you end up reinforcing the sort of maladaptive degenerate personal and social psyche that does things like killing John Lennon.

Wake up people. QUALITY art really matters.

Garbage postmodern art leads to harder stuff - personal and cultural degeneracy.

One could infer that those who read nothing are nothing.

"There is stuff on Wikileaks (presumably about Jacobs, Gold etc.?), and it ain't pretty."

Do you have links you can share to the Wikileaks info you are referring to?

Jacobspeak:

“There have been thousands of roadblocks from which firearms our police force should carry to the insignia,” Jacobs said. “There are so many different decisions that have to be made and that is part of the culture clash.”

I wish journalists would stop citing Lloyd Jacobs as their only source when evaluating the success of the takeover. This is like asking Ronald McDonald whether Big Macs are good for you -- his job depends on his answering a particular way.
