Brains on ice or how administrators think they can do without faculty on the UT campus. Read about the latest initiative, part 2:...

I.C.E. ? An Innovative Project Allows Students To Customize Their Education and the Cost of a Degree

I.C.E. (Integrated Customized Education) Open House

FREE FOOD and GIVEAWAYS!!!Thursday November 29, 2012 3-7 pm

UT Carlson Library - Second Floor Learning Commons

This invitation is open to everyone. Students and Prospective Students, All faculty/admin, High School Students and Faculty, Local Community Members,Community and Business Leaders, etc.

Students looking to consolidate their coursework , save on the overall cost of tuition and graduate sooner can now enroll in an innovative,
one-of-a-kind program at UT. Integrated Customized Education, or the I.C.E.Project, is a new way for students to combine their coursework for multiple
undergraduate courses and make time spent in college more efficient and effective. I.C.E. helps students to demonstrate to experts and employers
that a student is directly qualified to participate in work that requires experience and mastery of learning in a particular industry or field.
I.C.E. supports students and faculty by helping to reduce the overall cost of a degree as well as the time it takes to complete it. It also may provide access to courses, credit, or experiences otherwise unavailable.

So how does I.C.E. work?

An engineering student who needs a course in Composition and Social Science? will work with the Writing Studio and a freely available course from MIT in Public Planning and will earn credit for both as well as credit
for the Independent Study course they are enrolled in (IDS 2010). The student will have done this in the context of a guided project that combines the knowledge of public planning and political processes, while demonstrating competencies in communication and social responsibility as outlined in the matched learning objectives for these courses. The student
has paid for 3 academic credits but has earned 9, advancing degree
completion, customizing the student experience in the context of the student's goals and interests, and advancing the overall higher education
goal of student learning.

"The York University faculty had heard it all. Yet still they fought vigorously and ultimately successfully to preserve quality education and protect themselves from administrative assault. During their long strike they countered such administration propaganda with the truth about what was happening to higher education and eventually won the support of students, the media, and the public. Most important, they secured a new contract containing unique and unprecedented provisions which, if effectively enforced, give faculty members direct and unambiguous control over all decisions relating to the automation of instruction, including veto power. According to the contract, all decisions regarding the use of technology as a supplement to classroom instruction or as a means of alternative delivery (including the use of video, CD–ROMs, Internet Web sites, computer–mediated conferencing, etc.) “shall be consistent with the pedagogic and academic judgments and principles of the faculty member employee as to the appropriateness of the use of technology in the circumstances.” The contract also guarantees that “a faculty member will not be required to convert a course without his or her agreement.” Thus, the York faculty will be able to ensure that the new technology, if and when used, will contribute to a genuine enhancement rather than a degradation of the quality of education, while at the same time preserving their positions, their autonomy, and their academic freedom. The battle is far from won, but it is a start."

Welcome to Londonistan: Is Amerikanistan Next?

Excellent article Bloggie – “Why I am not a Professor or The Decline and Fall of the British University” speaks to many of the problems arising from the contemporary malaise of Marxist Feminist Postmodernism, political correctness, “diversity” “multiculturalism” etc. in academia and modern western society.

“Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery.” – Sir Winston Churchill

“The trouble with socialism is that eventually you run out of other people’s money.” – Former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher – citing Austrian economist Friedrich Hayek’s book “The Road to Serfdom”

“[German efforts towards] multiculturalism has utterly failed.” – Current German Chancellor Angela Merkel

Those who have lived in oppressive or ultra-liberal societies clearly understand the dangers and evils of Marxist collectivism and socialism because they have lived them first-hand. They come running to the West whenever they can (and for an increasing number of people from Great Britain etc. – the West sadly no longer means ultra-liberal Europe – it means the still more moderate but ever increasingly liberal U. S. – which simply cannot seem to get enough of more big government, entitlements, abortion and free sex, drugs and rock and roll).

Why is it that THEY clearly understand the greatness of our society and how important it is to defend these values – but WE do not?

Western Europe has tried the great Marxist Feminist “multicultural” experiment and seen it fail. They are now trying to reverse their errors.

We can only hope we have not already passed the tipping point of systematic socio-economic and cultural collapse in Europe, America and the rest of the West.

The recent American presidential election would seem to indicate it may already be too late.

Those who truly care about the welfare of themselves and their friends, colleagues and loved ones – as well as the future welfare of academia, modern society, western civilization and the world – need to not only understand these issues, but also get involved in winning over the hearts and minds necessary to turn the tide.

Yes, this means drawing a line in the sand, taking a stand and pushing back hard in the name of truth and liberty when necessary – like Leonides and the ancient Spartans and Athenians did against the Persian hordes at Thermopylae.

But since many tend to view these issues in purely threatening and divisive terms of identity politics – us/them, win/lose, male/female, black/white, rich/poor, liberal/ conservative, etc. – it also means enlightened members of each arbitrarily divided identity group need to work to convince their own – that preserving western cultural, intellectual, scientific, economic and technological heritage, free democratic societies and free markets is in everyone’s best interest – rich and poor, male and female, young and old and members of all religions, ethnicities or other identity groups.

This means enlightened academics need to speak directly to their not-so-enlightened colleagues and students in non-confrontational ways others can easily understand and identify with – women need to speak to women, minorities to minorities, the young to the young, the “cool” to the “cool”, liberals to liberals, conservatives to conservatives, Jews to Jews, Christians to Christians, Muslims to Muslims, etc.

The noose continues to tighten on free speech, political and economic independence and other civil liberties. Our government, military, intelligence authorities, police, media, press, popular culture and schools and universities are increasingly authoritarian, monolithic and centralized. Spy drones roam the skies and even the Internet is being fenced off and monitored by tracking software and surveillance.

The wolves are at Liberty’s door. If they sense weakness or fear – the end will come quickly and ferociously (like it did recently in Benghazi).

On a topic actually relevant to UT, a previous poster in another thread reported that the first "ICE" meeting attracted very few students (less than 10 as I recall). If they actually wanted test this (and I think it is ka ka) they might have promoted it to the Honors students first and seen if there was any interest in that group. It would seem to me the Honors students would likely have more chances of success with ICE than students from the general population.

On another topic, please give the anti pomo/liberalizm poster his own thread. Every single thread on this blog ends up being blown up by these posts. Channel these posts about pomo/liberalism into a single thread where anyone interested can follow them and read his lectures. If a single thread is devoted to this topic and author it might be obvious even to him that each and every one of the posts repeats the same lecture and it's not actually necessary to rephrase the attacks and re-post them in every single thread. The poster isn't even interested in a discussion - the posts just want to lecture us all. I suspect this poster has on more than one occasion even left replies to his own posts in an attempt to prove their relevance to the blog and to compliment himself.

Re Zelig and pro censorship poster 3:52

Yes, it must be an excruciating exertion for you to roll your finger on your mouse and scroll past any posts you don't like.

And things like the downfall of western civilization are certainly not "relevant" to you or anyone else at UT.

Re Zelig

Is it Zelig, or is it Foucault?

You be the judge:

Below are some resources that may yet help preserve peace on Earth and good will towards all humankind.

Even if you identify completely (and misguidedly) with one or more political identity group – women, minorities, etc. – fanaticism, extremism, fundamentalism and terrorism (even from others who presumably identify with your group) are NOT in your best interest or in the best interest of those you care about.

In academia – this means the usual agent provocateur suspects – the MoFo PC PoMo administrators and professors of the Dr. Previous & Co. stripe.

“Not With a Bang but a Whimper: The Politics and Culture of Decline” by Theodore Dalrymple

(ALL of British physician Dalrymple’s books come highly recommended).

“In Not with a Bang But a Whimper, Dalrymple takes the measure of our cultural decline, with special attention to Britain-its bureaucratic muddle, oppressive welfare mentality, and aimless young-all pursued in the name of democracy and freedom. He shows how terrorism and the growing numbers of Muslim minorities have changed our public life. Also here are Mr. Dalrymple's trenchant observations on artists and ideologues, and on the treatment of criminals and the mentally disturbed, his area of medical interest.

[Note: This is an area of special interest to Zelig, our resident Law and Social Thought Foucauldian - read Dalrymple for a reality check].

In this essay collection, British writer Dalrymple (Life at the Bottom) lays out a case for the decline of Western civilization, finding its symptoms lurking in everything from multiculturalism to the delusions of honesty by political leaders. …Predictably pessimistic on the political front, the author has sharp words for his fellow Brits (They are educated by the state, the state provides for them in old age and has made saving unnecessary or, in some cases, actually uneconomic; they are treated and cured by the state... they are housed by the state.... Their choices concern only sex and shopping).”

Londonistan by Melanie Phillips

“The suicide bombings carried out in London in 2005 by British Muslims revealed an alarming network of Islamist terrorists and their sympathizers. Under the noses of British intelligence, London became the European hub for the promotion, recruitment and financing of Islamist terror and extremism - so much so that it has been mockingly dubbed 'Londonistan'. In this ground-breaking book, Melanie Phillips pieces together the story of how Londonistan developed as a result of the collapse of British self-confidence and national identity and its resulting paralysis by multiculturalism and appeasement. The result is an ugly climate in Britain of irrationality and defeatism, which now threatens to undermine the alliance with America and imperil the defense of the free world.”

[German Chancellor Angela] Merkel Says German Multiculturalism Has Failed

Reuters 10/17/2010 – “Germany's attempt to create a multicultural society has "utterly failed," Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Saturday, adding fuel to a debate over immigration and Islam polarizing her conservative camp.

Speaking to a meeting of young members of her Christian Democrats (CDU), Merkel said allowing people of different cultural backgrounds to live side by side without integrating had not worked in a country that is home to some four million Muslims.

‘This (multicultural) approach has failed, utterly failed,’ Merkel told the meeting in Potsdam, south of Berlin.”

The Victim’s Revolution: The Rise of Identity Studies and the Closing of the Liberal Mind by Bruce Bawer

Anon 3:52

In fact this thread began with Bloggie’s post of the very interesting and relevant article ‘Why I Am Not A Professor’. Other posters chose to veer off this topic to discuss ICE instead. Perhaps this is because they found the harsh realities of academia discussed in Bloggie’s article unpleasant or even politically incorrect.

In any case ICE and other related localized topics are issues people here on campus have every opportunity to discuss elsewhere in depth and at length; in the faculty senate, board meetings, departmental meetings, town hall meetings, emails and memos, hallway and water cooler gossip etc.

The poster you complain about actually followed up on the original thread topic of the article. The systematic degeneration of higher education and western society is a highly relevant topic with both local and global implications.

These topics tend to be discussed largely among like-minded left-leaning academic partisans with political axes to grind and personal careers to promote, who tend to avoid if not suppress any objective and reasoned intellectual and non-partisan discussion. It is precisely because many of the broader issues discussed in the article posted by Bloggie have been inadequately discussed and understood for decades that we now have so many problems in higher education.

It seems if anyone is irrelevant, off topic and lecturing here it is you.

I emphatically agree with this recommendation:

"please give the anti pomo/liberalizm poster his own thread."

Some of us wonder why Bloggie trucks around with this s**tload of dead weight and blather. Rumors are flying.

Anonymous said...

There is no reason for rumor's to fly as they are much more likely truths flying. Bloggie is allowing so much distracting bullshit that is serving a destructive outcome. The Forum has lost its original purpose (or if not its original purpose, it was serving as its original impact) - to expose the UT administration's destruction of the University. Why expose it? Answer: to achieve mobilization of otherwise frightened faculty. Anon

Bloggie. Why do you persist to encourage these redundant mindless rants from a screwball spewing boilerplate from checklists published for fools by Heritage Foundation and other neoliberal stinktanks, quack hatcheries and baloney factories? Those rumors must be true!

The Academic Thought Police Go Ballistic: But Stay the Course Bloggie

Those who oppose Bloggie's open forum policy offer as an alternative only their own anonymous "emphatic opinions" and ad hominem name calling: "turd" "mentally ill" "redundant mindless rants from a screwball spewing boilerplate from checklists published for fools by Heritage Foundation and other neoliberal stinktanks, quack hatcheries and baloney factories" -- and veiled threats of "rumors flying".

Are rumors REALLY flying?

Oh no! Then we must invoke the anonymous gag order demands of the mob for censorship of ideas at once! There’s no other option!

Listen to yourselves. Sad, pathetic and frightening to think academics could sound like such a bunch of mindless, childish, violent street thugs - straight from The Lord of the Flies.

These are not the methods of learned civilized academics. These are the methods of gossips, back stabbers, slanderers, secret police interrogators and yes – of Nazis.

Your ugly vitriol and veiled threats and innuendo exposes the fundamental bankruptcy of your understanding and the groupthink fanaticism of your ideas, revealing the truly frightening mean-spiritedness lying just beneath the surface of your pretentious academic pseudo-intellectual veneer and preening faux concerns for “social justice” and “free speech” and “civil liberties” and the “arts and humanities” and the higher ideals of higher education.

You should be ashamed of yourselves. You give academia and academics even more of a bad name than you already have, if that’s possible.

"The end of higher ed as we know it" (and given what we have seen here from some of our presumed "best and brightest" perhaps not a moment too soon)

Where are all the good men?

Why we desperately need strong role models for young people – especially young men

The outstanding local PBS documentary series Toledo Stories recently documented the story of the Anderson family.

http://www.toledoblade.com/TV-Radio/2012/11/21/History-of-The-Andersons-chronicled-on-PBS-Toledo-Stories.html

All politics aside, the Anderson’s strong family values and ideals of American self-reliance and entrepreneurial spirit represent a fine role model for all of us, particularly today’s youth.

This short film should be shown to as many people as possible at UT and at other local colleges and area high schools.

The UT Business College and area business leaders should also use this as a source of inspiration for themselves and their students, employees and other constituents.

We can only hope this generation of young people is receiving enough mentoring from the likes of the Andersons to carry on into the future.

All of the Toledo Stories documentaries about local history and the role of many local ethnic groups in building our great community and country should be shown to young and old alike – in schools, churches etc.

In far too many respects we have lost our way as a society. These films offer a guide to getting back on the right track.

Our schools and universities teach students how to “question” and “deconstruct” everything about American and Western culture, values and society before first teaching them how to understand and respect the history of why things came to be the way they are and how difficult it was for our strong and courageous parents and grandparents – and their strong and courageous parents and grandparents – to build and defend these fine values and institutions and why this is mostly good and how and why “progressive,” “socialist,” “multicultural” and other alternatives can be, have been and are very, VERY bad.

Good men continued

Nobody needs good role models more than young men these days. All we hear about from all sides is women, women, women – but young men who go wrong can cause all of us MUCH more trouble in the way of violent crime etc. than young women who go wrong.

A recent NFL football documentary film series – A Football Life – can serve as excellent inspiration for all young men. One of the documentaries features the life of Baltimore Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis – widely regarded as the greatest linebacker to play the game in recent history.

His enormous passion for life and the game of football, his unwavering work ethic, his strong family and religious values, his love for and devotion to his family and his children and his generous spirit towards all people make Ray Lewis a fine role model for all young men – especially young black men.

Other equally inspirational A Football Life documentaries feature the likes of the great Washington Redskins running back John Riggins.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Football_Life

Ray Lewis and John Riggins are excellent no-nonsense, no excuses, old-school, rugged male counterexamples to present day college and professional primadonna athletes, who are far too often world-class egomaniacs, lowlifes and jerks.

All young men today desperately need to see such fine examples of strong, powerful family men like Dick Anderson, Ray Lewis and John Riggins, who were able to prevail against adversity and live passionate, dedicated, successful and exemplary (if at times, like all of us, also all-too-human and flawed) lives on and off the playing field.

Most especially in today’s popular culture and in academia – men need to be allowed to be and clearly shown how to be strong, confident, intelligent, ethical, responsible, respectful and good men

– as opposed to the Marxist Feminist Sex and the City “the perfect man is gay” ideal of the submissive, timid, effeminate, deferential, groveling, vain, narcissistic, frivolous, lustful, self-flagellating, philandering, aimless, mindlessly woman-worshipping, adolescent boy toy bad boy liberal male

– who despite everything somehow still has enough money to shower on all the needy, messed-up, spoiled, self-indulgent, man love-hating Sarah Jessica Parker/Paris Hilton/Kardashian wannabe super slut party girls.

The simple answer to the common lament, “Where are all the good men?” (not to mention “Why do deeply moral and religious Muslims hate us?”) is this: Our men (and women) are being systematically demeaned, perverted and destroyed by a degenerate, anti-male, anti-family, anti-marriage, anti-western Marxist Feminist society and education system.

This leaves us only with male adult Peter Pan adolescent metrosexuals and dweebs like Jerry Seinfeld and Dr. Previous, degenerate misogynist playboys like Charlie Sheen and Bill Maher, countless male drama queen rock stars, movie stars and media personalities, drooling liberal do-gooders and talking heads like Michael Moore and Joe Biden, New Age con artists like Deepak Chopra, and violent, tattooed, uber-macho Neanderthal biker thugs, gangsta rappers and jocks – not to mention millions of lost male souls on the streets and in prisons.

What we ALL really need instead is a wide diversity of good, strong and healthy American women AND good, strong and healthy American men to form good, strong and healthy American families that raise good, strong and healthy American children and maintain a good, strong and healthy American society.
