UT Announces Layoffs (Blade)

The University of Toledo will send layoff notices to an unspecified number of employees in the next several days, UT President Dr. Lloyd Jacobs said in a letter to employees Friday.

UT officials are finalizing the university’s budget, which the UT Board of Trustees is expected to pass before July 1.

Layoff notices will be distributed to union representatives and employees across the university, the letter said.

Dr. Jacobs has warned UT will lose $20 million a year in state funding if Ohio Gov. John Kasich’s recent two-year budget proposal remains unchanged.

Yeah, looks like Jake's going to try to throw anyone who doesn't fit in his strategic plan under this bus! What do we do to stop this?!

Yep. Gotta cover the bloated salaries of all those redundant deans, vice presidents and vice provosts somehow.

The Blade just announced a new wave of UT layoffs this afternoon.

BTW - What the heck is a "College of Innovative Learning" and why does it require a "Dean and Vice Provost".

Plenty of other weird administrative anomalies like this around campus that could be "reconfigured" to yield significant cost-cutting and save jobs.

All the people that he has thrown under the bus for "his vision" of what UT should be! I hope that he and those who enabled him will not be able to sleep at night!

Anon 1:52 PM.

Nothing. The Board of Trustees, the Courts and the Governor are all on Jake's side. All we can do is catalog the damage and report it to the public.

Even the Faculty Senate appears to be on Jake's side. The passage of the motion on the Core Curriculum indicates that either the Faculty Senate doesn't care any more or that our Senators do not understand what is at stake here. But Jake does...

The latest UTAAUP newsletter has information on UT's relationship with Constellation Solar. Someone with the info should do a side by side comparison: with the salaries of the employees Jacobs has laid off and the 6 million plus UT will be paying to Constellation over the course of the contract.

Or, in other words, it seems that UT employees are becoming the sacrificial lambs in at least one dubious Jacobs financial venture.

According to the info in the newsletter, the turbine has produced solar energy only 2 out of the last 20 months and, when it does produce electricity, it costs more than what UT pays Toledo Edison. It's also startling to note that in its agreement with Constellation, UT agreed not to meter the turbine, so no one will ever know just how much power it produces.

Lots of room under there ... but not high enough to clear the administrative bloat! But is there enough substance to the bus? If there isn't, it'll just sit on top of all that bloat, tires dangling in the air, spinning uselessly. But if enough of us get on board they'd at least have trouble heaving us off.

I'm sorry but the administration really is a bunch of selfish, greedy, insensitive, pompous, arrogant,hard-nosed, mean-spirited bastards!

Anon 6:06 am: Corruption continues to rule at UT under our (not-so-benevolent) despot. I hope someone does as you suggest! Whether or not it'll do any good is something else.

Did you notice Jake's letter came at 12:01 on the last Friday of classes? He usually does things like this at 5:01 on Fridays--must've taken the afternoon off! (While we peons continue to work.)
And just before one of our busiest weeks, just before summer break / semester starts! As usual ...

Speaking of "pay to play" .... While tuition skyrockets state public university library books are ending up in dumpsters to make room for this:

Video-Game-Rooms-Become-the/127229/

The University of Michigan can perhaps afford the luxury of investing in such technophilic money pits. The Univerity of Toledo cannot.

God spare Carlson Library from this sort of final insult to its good name.

Say! Why not just rename our main campus library the "Chuck E. Cheese Student-Centered Monument to Innovative and Relevant Lifelong Learning" -- (for a $$$ price)?

And don't forget to give the current and ex-library deans fat bonuses and big hugs when the deal is done.

It's crappy that he's waiting so long to tell people. They need time to try to find new jobs.

Anon 10:49 am,10:08 pm, and others: You are all right. This is the sadistic behavior of a bully--just one reason Jake isn't suited to being president.
