An expenditure of a mere $200,000 will save the university hundreds of dollars.

Meanwhile, hot off the press:

"But hard times have hit the nation's solar industry. Solyndra is the third solar company to seek bankruptcy protection this month. Officials said Wednesday that the global economy as well as unfavorable conditions in the solar industry combined to force the company to suspend its manufacturing operations.

The price for solar panels has tanked largely because of heavy competition from Chinese companies, dropping by about 42 percent this year.

Republicans have been looking into the Solyndra loan for months. The House Energy and Commerce Committee subpoenaed documents relating to the loan from the White House Office of Management and Budget. GOP Reps. Fred Upton of Michigan and Cliff Stearns of Florida issued a joint statement on Wednesday saying it was clear that Solyndra was a dubious investment.

"We smelled a rat from the onset," the two lawmakers said."

I'm going to use as a point of comparison a recent UTAAUP document which reported a 1.5 million budget hit to cover the salary increases of a number of administrators between February & August 2011 - administrators already making at least $100.000.

Students are paying higher tuition. Faculty were asked to accept a contract roll over that contained no cost of living increase. Faculty, Instructors, part timers, are being assigned more and larger classes.

All of this, of course, being justified by the economic downturn mantra which is justifying every staff layoff, class size increase, etc etc.

And at the same time all of this is going on, according to the UTAAUP document, the administration can come up with 1.5 million to increase the salaries of administrators who were already making at least $100,000. Then add up the money the UT administration has spent on new administrative positions: the new assistant deans, the new deans, etc.. etc.. etc...

So pardon me if I can't help concluding we are all victims of an elaborate shell game. They put money under these shells, each one with a big "economic downturn" plastered on it, and then they move the money round and round and into their own pockets: bonuses, whacky "innovations," salary boosts...

Please close this site down: it is subversive to the administrative perrogative. Now, someone is starting to understand that administration can claim that the university is on hard times and move money around to suit their interests. We can't have this kind of thinking on this campus. Besides Arts & Science College doesn't exist and never has existed. We can rewrite history too: this is the NEW university.

What I wish the AAUP or someone with the info would do is present the data in more productive ways. Take the money the admins claim they have "saved" (via layoffs, etc) and then put it in a chart next to the admin salary increases, costs of new admin positions. If the money saved by laying off staff and support people is offset by the increase in admin gloat then I think you have a pretty good case that the admin is: 1. lying about the economic situation & 2. shedding salaries at the lower end of the budget to support/create new positions at the top end. 3. Restructuring the university not for the sake of economics but for politics. Play the same data game the admins do.. make the charts, powerpoint... and use the data to show their hypocrisy.

Anon 6:31: What I think you are asking for is TRANSPARENCY--which has been promised by the administration numerous times, but they've never come through.
