There is a problem, this is totally stupid, and unfortunately, it is totally true.

At least there will still be a College of Cosmetology. I always wondered where the universe came from.

We enter another dangerous period for the University of Toledo: the faculty will be off campus for a few weeks giving the administration free reign. What will this place look like when we come back? What new committtees formed?

I love these cartoons! Kudos Bloggie (or perhaps some other anonymous individual) for the interesting depictions of campus life...please bring back the snake pit.

The administration and board have effectively short circuited faculty and staff input in the decision making process. They can have their way with us whenever they want because they are afraid of nothing. Just like our whole nation, the common worker and middle-class mean very little anymore. The only ones whose input counts are those at the top. As a nation and a university we have entered a new Dark Age of economic, political and academic feudalism.

Why are faculty off campus. Most of the other staff will be working. Why don't you stick around and use the time to prepare for the next semester and improve your teaching skills.

Why are the faculty off campus? They are fulfilling their contract with the Board of Trustees.

To Anonymous 4:58am:
faculty have 9 month contracts. We may not be on campus during the break between semesters, but most of us are working at home preparing next semester's courses and planning our classes, and working on research projects. If you want my work hours, my teaching, research and service responsibilities, then get a Ph.D., submit yourself to the national job search market, the string of visiting positions requiring you and your family to move around the country; then you can spend another 6 years working for tenure, if you're lucky enough to find a tenure-track job. But hey, once you get tenure, you too can live the easy life: all you'll need to do is sit back and teach [prepare and teach classes, prepare tests and assignments, correct, evaluate, grade tests and assignments; then assess your tests and assignments; then revise classes, tests and assignments], advise, mentor, motivate students; do even more service to your department, college and the university; demonstrate engagement with the community; raise money, apply for grants, re-apply for grants; do the grant-funded research; spend your own money to do unfunded research; present your research a national and international meetings. But just remember: faculty get lots of time off.

And what do many admins do? Sit around at their posh free lunches and complain about faculty, figure out ways to screw students out of more cash, how to siphon more money off from departments and people who do real work to give it to themselves, or their friendly contractors or consultants....figure out how many of the little folk they need to fire to get their bonuses....oh, and you got to have retreats and more and more meaningless strategic plans drawn up.....all those things...very important.
